The Children In Nature program is a multi-state initiative, offering a variety of opportunities for children to experience and benefit from the natural world.

Sundays, Fontainebleau State Park, Mandeville - Primitive Woodworking, 11a.m. - 3p.m. This demonstration program features the use of a froe for splitting wood and the use of a shaving horse and drawknives to make wooden objects such as spoons, paddles, canes and tool handles. Wednesday-Sunday, Otis House-Fairview-Riverside State Park, Madisonville - Guided Tours. Tours of the Otis House c.1885 cover local history during the 1880s-1930s time span. The tour reveals architectural features, home life, and details of the sawmill industry during the timber boom years. Tours on the hour 9 a.m.-5 p.m. except noon. Saturdays, Fontainebleau State Park, Mandeville - Nature: A Closer Look, 9 a.m. Participants will hike with a site ranger along the nature trail for a more observant look at the natural world and will discuss information from the tallest trees to the smallest spiders. May 12 & 26, Fontainebleau State Park, Mandeville - Wonder of Wetlands, 1 p.m. Participants will meet the Interpretive Ranger on the lakefront where they will learn about erosion and what is being done to preserve the shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain. May 19, Fairview-Riverside State Park, Madisonville - Bait-N-Wait Kid's Fishing Derby, 8 a.m. - noon, On National Kids to Parks Day, children ages 15 and under are invited to fish along the banks of the Tchefuncte River and at the pond near Otis House. Fish will be identified, measured, and weighed during this catch and release program with prizes awarded for various categories. A casting competition is also included during the event and mini-anglers under five years old may participate in magnetic fishing and create fish prints to take home. Participants need to bring their own fishing poles and bait. Registration is requested and the program is free with general park admission. May 19, Fontainebleau State Park, Mandeville - Nature Hayride, 3 p.m. Hay wagon pulled by tractor will pick up riders at the Visitor Center, to see the natural world at Fontainebleau State Park. The ranger will identify the flora and fauna encountered along the way, with emphasis on poisonous plants. Hayride will go along the main road to the lakefront, through the campground and back to the Visitor Center.
